Coconut Island Bar & Grill opening delayed until May 15; manager promises grand presentation

One of the biggest questions on Cedar Creek Lake is "When will Coconut finally open."

Coconut Island Bar & Grill manager Laurie Caves said that will occur on May 15, when the restaurant and night club finally opens the door to the public. "We're really looking forward to it," Caves said during an interview in the restaurant as workers put finishing touches on the much-anticipated project.

The planning for the new business on the lake began two years ago, and residents, weekenders and visitors have eagerly awaited the opening. It will be the only public venue on the lake when it opens.

A previousy announced opening of May 1 failed to take place because of continuing renovation and local and state government licensing.

"We're going to be having a great opening, and everyone is going to be impressed with the presentation," Caves said.

Caves said she is planning a grand celebration opening in June after the business gets underway, and that there could be a "soft opening" a couple of days prior to the May 15 start date.

The owners of Coconut have spent several hundreds of thousands of dollars, at the most conserative estimates, in building docks for boaters, a deck for outdoor dining and entertainment and total restoration of the old Chinese restaurant on the island between Gun Barrel City and Seven Points.

The restaurant announced its hours of operation recently after receiving an after-hours license to sell beer and liquor.

The hours will be Sunday through Thursday 11 a.m. to midnight and Friday and Saturday 11 a.m. to 2 a.m.

The new business is on the island off of the causeway connecting Seven Points and Gun Barrel City.

Remodeling began on the old Bejing Restaurant building in 2013 with a planned opening for Spring 2014. The drought and extensive construction delayed the opening until this year.

The food will be American, and it will include seafood, steaks and sandwiches. A new dock built by the operators will allow lake residents to arrive by boat. Dining will be available inside and outside on a covered patio.

The facility includes a private banquet room for private luncheons and parties. There will be entertainment on weekends.

The opening coincides with the rain recently filling Cedar Creek Lake back to full pool after a punishing five-year drought that saw the lake full only one other time in 2012.

Cedar Creek Lake

Fishing Report from TPWD (Apr. 17)

EXCELLENT. Slightly stained; 70 degrees; 0.00 feet at pool. Hybrid striped bass and white bass have made a full recovery from the spawn and are now back in the main lake in droves and are on a feeding frenzy. Look for heavy bird activity throughout the lake on flats and near the Dam on edges of drop offs especially on cloudy and overcast days. The Hybrids and Whitebass have started schooling in water from 6-14 feet at the dam and any wind blown shallow point or seawall. Late evening schooling action is also happening in shallow coves and points throughout the lake. Reports of great catches using silver or white slabs and spinnerbaits and retrieving off the bottom at a very slow retrieve to catch these fish in depths of 8-16 feet of water. The crappie have also migrated back into the main lake. Look for them under bridge pylons or under docks where the depths are between 3-10 feet. Guides have been reporting exceptionally nice catches on sunny warmer days. Report by Brent Herbeck, Herbeck’s Lonestar Fishing Guide Service.
