The Humane Society of Cedar Creek Lake's new executive director Colleen Tapia met the public at the animal shelter's open house in Tool June 14.

Volunteers and other supporters of the organization mingled with the public, raising money for the animal shelter and adopting out several animals.

Despite the heat, many visitors turned out to see Norman the pig, the organization's mascot Skeeter, the adoptable animals and to visit with vendors that provide services for animals. Vistors competed for prizes such as tickets to the Dallas Zoo and munched on hot dogs.

Animal control officers from Henderson and Kaufman Counties, Friends of the Animals' low-cost spay and neuter and vacination clinic and animal trainer Shiloh Dudley provided information to visitors about pets and homeless animals.

Volunteer coordinator Leslie Casey said the open house was a success, and the organization looks forward to hosting more events. "It's been really great," Casey said. "I think everyone had a really good time."

Anyone interested in volunteering at the shelter is welcome to join the group's volunteer get-together at the Seven Points Dairy Queen at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesdays, July 16 and Aug. 20, Casey said.
