What you NEED to do this weekend!

Depending on whether you stay tuned in to local events or not, you may have heard about our current "Staying open until 2am in Gun Barrel" controversy. Allow me to capsulize the events for you:

It seems Applebee's wanted to come to Gun Barrel, but their business policy is to stay open until 2am on weekends (they are a bar and a restaurant), so since we need more tax income and more jobs in Gun Barrel, it was a no brainer for the five city council members to all vote (5-0) in FAVOR of allowing bar/restaurants the ability to stay open until 2am (instead of just midnight). Even the sheriff was on board with it and anticipated no additional problems by just serving alcohol for two additional hours on the weekend. SO... the measure went to our Mayor, Dennis Woods, and he proceeded to veto the change based on his strict religious convictions and his desire to make Gun Barrel a completely "dry" municipality at some point.

So back it went to the city council which needed at least three votes to overturn the mayors veto. They AGAIN voted 5-0 in FAVOR of allowing the later hours, so it became the law.

Well, not to be outdone, the mayor decided that the public (and his church) should decide this issue for themselves and created a referendum for the Nov 8th ballot to repeal the now existing law.

I would insert at this point that if Gun Barrel cannot raise more tax money from businesses, that we would then be stuck with a new property tax to make up the difference (that is the mayors plan).

So THIS SATURDAY (Nov. 5th) there will be a rally to vote AGAINST the repeal (meaning the law would stay the same and allow the 2am closings). It will be from 3-5pm in the parking lot of city hall on Main St.

I have personally volunteered my time to play and speak at this rally because I believe this new 2am law is fundamental to our growth and I DON'T want to see it repealed by a few zealots who think they should be allowed to dictate the alleged morality of tax paying, law abiding adults, while stiffling our communities growth prospects as a "resort" (i.e. FUN) area.

So if you love this lake as much as I do, and you don't want any new property taxes, and you want to see growth and jobs in our community, then PLEASE attend this rally and remember to VOTE AGAINST THE REPEAL on NOVEMBER 8th!

I'll see you Saturday at the rally!!!!
