The widening of the State Highway 334 causeway connecting Gun Barrel City and Seven Points is scheduled to begin within two years at a cost of $32 million, according to Texas Department of Transportation officials.
Chief Engineer Bill Hale told a delegation of Cedar Creek Lake Area Chamber of Commerce officials Feb. 7, 2017, that the environmental impact study is complete, and that all permits are approved for the construction project, according to the Athens Daily Review.
The bridges will be widened to four lanes, and they will be raised to allow boat traffic underneath them.
The Cedar Creek Lake delegation traveled to Austin to visit elected representatives for Cedar Creek Lake and Athens Day. They met with Rep. Lance Gooden, Rep. John Wray and Sen. Robert Nichols.
The project has been planned for more than a decade. The bridges were built in the 1960s. Increased traffic have made the bridges dangerous. Accidents and lane closures with long traffic delays are common.
