The Gun Barrel City Council has scheduled town hall meetings to answer residents’ questions about the proposed new city property tax.
The proceeds from the property tax would be used to fund $11 million in bonds to improve roads and fire and police protection. (UPDATE: City officials announced at the public hearing they no planned to purse a bond sale. Improvements would be made directly from the proceeds of the property tax revenue annually on a more lengthy schedule, they said.)
The town hall meetings will be held Thursdays, Sept. 11, 18 and 25 at 6:30 p.m. in Gun Barrel City Hall.
The City Council recently proposed a $0.2599 property tax per $100 valuation. A residence with an appraised value of $100,000 would be taxed $259.90 effective in 2015 if voters approve the measure in the Nov. 4 election.
Gun Barrel City’s property tax is currently zero percent. The City Charter requires an election to be held to raise the property tax.
City officials said the property tax is needed to improve roads and public safety, which would include the hiring of new police officers and firefighters.
