The Humane Society of Cedar Creek Lake named its new animal transport van the “Danny Van” in memory of Danny Hampel, an animal lover who operated the Dairy Queen in Seven Points.
The Humane Society spent two years raising money to buy the van, and many of the fundraising events took place at the Dairy Queen owned by Hampel and his partner, Shirley Leone.
The van’s logo includes the words “Making Waves for Adoptions.” Sugar Rock Graphics helped develop the logo for the van that is used to transport animals to adoption events.
“Danny was a special individual,” Animal shelter spokeswoman Lanette Ainsworth said at the public presentation of the van Jan. 21. “He was very interested in the shelter, and he did everything he could to help meet its needs.”
Hampel and Leone, who also own the Kemp Dairy Queen, moved to the Cedar Creek Lake area in 2003 and began helping raise money for the animal shelter and its work. Hampel died in 2015.
The Dairy Queen stores continue to help raise money for the animal shelter since his death.
