-- The Log Cabin City Council and the Lake View Management and Development District Board of Directors recently approved an agreement for the city to provide wastewater treatment services to Long Cove development.
The agreement will provide for the construction of a connection from the development’s waste water system to the city’s treatment plant. Upon approval and permitting by Texas Commission on Environmental Quality officials, construction will begin in 2016 and be completed in 2017, according to city and LVMDD officials.
City officials said Log Cabin’s treatment facility contains excess capacity, allowing the partnership to be formed. The city will realize new revenues as new households in the development are added to the system, and Long Cove residents will pay the same rate as city households for the service, they noted.
Long Cove officials said the development would benefit by not being responsible for its own treatment facility, and the project would help state officials meet their goal of consolidating treatment facilities. The development will pay all of the costs of the connection, and it will also pay for upgrades to the city’s facility.
Long Cove President Christopher Kelsey said the development is pleased to enter into the agreement because it will simplify the process. “While we will end up spending a similar amount to connect to Log Cabin as we would have to build our own facility, it is much better to connect to an existing facility that already has a great track record,” he said in a statement. “Starting your own plant always comes with challenges. This is a good deal for us and for Log Cabin.”
Log Cabin Mayor Larry Nolan called the agreement a “win-win” for both parties, and he noted city staff researched the proposal thoroughly before entering into it. “Long Cove was willing to address all of our questions and concerns,” he said. “The city ends up with upgrades to the plant that we wanted and will benefit in the long run from the new revenues coming from the additional connections to the system.”
Long Cove has sold 50 properties to date, all of which are now the site of new homes or ones in design or construction. Long Cove plans the construction of about 400 properties.
