Go Hawaiian without leaving East Texas

The Cedar Creek Lake Area Chamber pf Commerce will repeat the Hawaiian-themed fall celebration and fundraiser it launched last year.

Luau 2016 will be hosted at the East Texas Arboretum and Botanical Society Sept. 17, 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m., featuring authentic Hawaiian fare and entertainment by Keola’s Hula Halau and The Hawaiian Serenaders. They will perform Polynesian songs and dance. There will also be an island-style Reggae group and a firedancer.

The chamber is looking for sponsors of its final fundraiser for the year. Sponsorships range from $100 for small signage up to $1,500 for a table of eight at front stage, VIP parking passes, fresh flowers for all guests, marketing publicity up to and at the event and a main entrance banner.

Other sponsorship levels are available at the $250, $500 and $1,000 level. Only 200 tickets will be sold for the event. Tickets are $60 each.

Chamber President Jo Ann Hanstrom said a successful fundraiser at this time of year will allow the group to continue its work for 2016 and start 2017 with “some financial ease.”

“Our event was a huge success in 2015, and we’re hopeful that if you were a sponsor of Luau 2015 you’ll consider being an underwriter of Luau 2016,” Hanstrom said. “Just like all of our fundraisers, all of the proceeds will go into the chamber operating funds so that we may continue to offer benefits and services to our members and to the community.

Fishing Report from TPWD (Apr. 24)

EXCELLENT. Slightly stained; 70 degrees; 0.40 feet above pool. Hybrid striped bass and white bass have made a full recovery from the spawn and are now back in the main lake in droves and are on a feeding frenzy. Look for heavy bird activity throughout the lake on flats and near the dam on edges of drop offs especially on cloudy and overcast days. The Hybrids and Whitebass have started schooling in water from 6-14 feet at the dam and any wind blown shallow point or seawall. Late evening schooling action is also happening in shallow coves and points throughout the lake. Reports of great catches using silver or white slabs and spinnerbaits and retrieving off the bottom at a very slow retrieve to catch these fish in depths of 8-16 feet of water. The crappie have also migrated back into the main lake. Look for them under bridge pylons or under docks where the depths are between 3-10 feet. Guides have been reporting exceptionally nice catches on sunny warmer days. Report by Brent Herbeck, Herbeck’s Lonestar Fishing Guide Service.
