Gun Barrel City has launched a Facebook page for property owners to ask questions and debate a proposed property tax that voters will consider in the Nov. 4 election.
The current property tax is zero, but city officials say it will be necessary to fund $11 million in bonds through a property tax to bring roads and public safety up to standard. The proposed $0.2599 per $100 valuation would be used to spend $10 million on road improvements and $1 million to hire new police officers and firefighters, according to city officials.
The Facebook page at www.facebook.com/gunbarrelcitypropertytaxinfo is now available to receive comments. Property owners who want to receive information about the proposal can also email [email protected].
In announcing the Internet venues, city officials said, "We reserve the right to block any individual who uses offensive language or uses this site as a platform to further their own political cause. We are here to give you the facts regarding this election so you can make your own informed decision."
City Manager Gerry Boren said city officials and staff would not be attempting to promote the property tax, but they wanted to offer an avenue for information to be distributed about the proposal.
