GUN BARREL CITY -- Alcoholic beverage sales in restaurants could be on the city's ballot again in November.
Chili's is sponsoring a petition that would allow voters to decide if restaurants in Gun Barrel City should continue to operate as private clubs or be free to sell alcoholic beverages without registering customers' personal information.
The measure would apply only to businesses that derive more than 51 percent of their income from food sales. It would not apply to businesses that are primarily known as nightclubs.
As it stands, restaurants that sell alcoholic beverages are required to maintain membership information on customers who purchase alcoholic beverages. The memberships must be renewed yearly.
Gun Barrel City Manager Gerry Boren said a representative of Brinker International Restaurants, which owns Chili's, told him that it costs the local restaurant $20,000 per year to maintain the membership information through the Unicard identification system.
Boren said the corporation advised him that it would be conducting a door-to-door petition in Gun Barrel City in an attempt to get the item on the November ballot.
Gun Barrel City voters last addressed the issue of alcoholic beverages on the ballot in 2011 when a measure was passed to extend the sales of alcoholic beverages in restaurants on weekend nights until 2 a.m.
Supporters said the measure was necessary to encourage new restaurant development in Gun Barrel City. Opponents said it would lead to a more dangerous environment in the city.
Local voters passed the measure by a wide margin, allowing the extension of hours for alcoholic beverages consumption.
City officials said the measure was needed to attract a new Applebee's restaurant to town. The restaurant is still in the planning stages.
