Gun Barrel City officials say they want the city to become known as an entertainment venue of note in Texas so they are adding a fall and spring festival to the lineup in addition to the annual July 4 Fest.
The City Council recently approved a spring festival after hearing from city officials that the recent Fall Fest featuring a lawn mower race, carnival rides, a brisket cook-off and craft vendors had been a success.
The council approved a budget of $10,000 for the new spring festival and a $60,000 budget for July Fest with a provision for a 10 percent cost overrun if necessary.
City Manager Gerry Boren said other cities are also wanting to get into the entertainment business, and the bidding for performing artists could become more competitive.
For the past two years Gun Barrel City has brought in Vanilla Ice, and city officials want to book him again. The headliner attracted a large audience, they said.
City officials told the council they wanted to make all three festivals annual events because they bring visitors in from out of town who spend money at local businesses.
The spring festival will include a dog fashion show and a band performance. Boren said it would be a more elite project, and he noted that he would like for Gun Barrel City to eventually construct the Cedar Creek Lake area's first dog park.
