TOOL -- One of the fastest growing outdoor sports is stand-up paddling, and Don's Port Marina will be offering it this year.
Stand-up paddling involves the use of a canoe-like paddle where the participants stands on top of a larger version of a surfboard. Paddlers propel themselves through the water with side-to-side paddles strokes.
The equipment will be made available through the marina's cooperative effort with the company, RIO SUP, said marina owner Terry Scott.
"We're both excited about bringing stand-up paddling to Cedar Creek Lake," Scott said. "We've spent the winter getting everything prepared to have a great summer of 2013."
The sport reportedly offers a core workout with a cadence much like swimming or cycling. People who can not run or cycle because of injuries or arthritis may find this to be an exercise they can accomplish.
The marina, which began operations at Cedar Creek Lake in the 1960s, is open in the winter Tuesday through Saturday selling gasoline, making full-service boat repairs and operating boat slips. The rest of the operation, including the Tiki Hut Bar & Grill and RIO SUP will kick off the high-season for spring and summer on April 20.
RIO SUP will offer paddling boards for rent and sale and host paddle boarding events like races, tours around the lake and other fitness classes.
