MABANK -- Cowboys and cowgirls will show off their skills at bareback bronc riding, bull riding, calf roping and barrel racing during Mabank's 57th annual Rodeo and Western Week celebration June 25-30.
Western Week is sponsored by the Mabank Volunteer Fire Department.
Registration for the rodeo competition begins Monday, June 25, 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Call 972-571-9571 to begin the registration process, which requires fees of up to to $100 per event.
One cowgirl will be chosen as Rodeo Queen to preside over the festivities when the the three-day rodeo competition gets underway Thursday, Friday and Saturday, June 28-30, at 8 p.m., at the Andrew Gibbs Memorial Arena, adjacent to Business Highway 175 near downtown Mabank.
Nominees for Rodeo Queen will rehearse for the pageantry at the Andrew Gibbs Memorial Arena, Monday, June 25, at 7 p.m. The nominees will attend a dinner at the Mabank Fire Station Wednesday, June 27,where a drawing will select the cowgirl chosen to be queen, who will preside on horseback with her cowgirl court.
The games portion of the celebration will open at Mabank Pavilion in George Watts Park, near the rodeo arena, on Tuesday, June 26, at 6:30 p.m. The contests will include relay races,tossing games and the annual bed race, where four teammates roll a hospital bed at full speed while a "patient" rides the bed around a series of markers. Registration for the bed race must be completed by June 21 at 6 p.m. at the Mabank Fire Station.
There will also be events for young children, including a calf scramble and stick horse race.
Saturday's rodeo day will begin with a parade from the arena through Historic Downtown Mabank, beginning at 5 p.m. The line-up will begin at 4 p.m.
Cash prizes of $100, $75 and $50 will be awarded for the three best floats. Registration forms must be turned in by 2 p.m. on Saturday at the fire station.
At the conclusion of the rodeo Saturday night there will be a dance at the Mabank Pavilion.
Admission to the rodeo is $5 for adults, $3 for children and children under five get in free.
