ATHENS -- It's perfect weather for an Autumn visit to the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center where young and old can enjoy an exhibition of underwater wildlife and the birds that populate the state's waterways.
On Oct. 25, 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., the facility will be decorated for Halloween, and local businesses and organizations will be distributing candy. On the second Saturday of every month the facility hosts a bird and nature walk from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
The facility, which is named for Edwin L. Cox, Jr., former chairman of the Parks and Wildlife Commission, is also open Tuesday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
The 106-acre facility, which is operated by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, offers daily interactive dive shows, narrated tram tours of the 37-acre, 45-pond hatchery, fishing opportunities, a self-guided wetlands trail,group educational programs, gift and snack shop, picnic areas and meeting facilities.
It houses a hatchery, laboratory, aquarium and education center featuring underwater wildlife native to the state's freshwater streams, ponds and lakes.
Dive shows start a 11 a.m., Tuesday through Saturday. There are also dive shows at 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The shows are followed by a tram tour of the outside hatchery.
Admission $5.50 for adults, $4.50 for seniors 65 and older and $3.50 for children ages 4 through 12. Season passes and group rates are also available.Pets are not allowed entry to the grounds.
