Thunder Over Cedar Creek Lake to stage annual air show, fireworks display

The "Thunder Over Cedar Creek Lake air show" returns on July 7 at 6 p.m. to provide its spectacular fireworks display that is visible to boaters and shore huggers all over the lake area. The event, which drew an estimated 40,000 people last year, provides free viewing from boats, the lake's shores, local parks and private residences. The air show featuring both civilian and military aircraft flying within 500 feet of the ground culminates with the fireworks show after dark. It is billed as the fifth-largest airshow in the nation and the only one flying over water in the Southwest. The "thunder" in the show's name refers to the sound of the jets flying low over the lake. Although the show and fireworks display is available to watch by the public for free, VIP seating for the event is available at the Pinnacle Golf and Boat Club for a $50 donation to the Cedar Creek Veterans Foundation that sponsors the annual show. A reception will be held on July 6 at the Pinnacle Golf and Boat Club for ticket holders to meet the pilots who will be operating the aircraft in the show. This year's event includes performances by Fighter Jets, Inc., Jan Collmer Airshows, Otto the Helicopter and Trojan Phly. The proceeds of the air show benefit the Cedar Creek Veterans Foundation which is a nonprofit organization established to raise money for the physical and emotional recovery and rehabilitation of injured and disabled military personnel and veterans in the North Texas area. Thunder Over Cedar Creek Lake is the principal fundraising activity. The organization reports that 47,000 men and women have been wounded serving in the military since 2001. Most of the pilots participating in the show represent the Navy, Marines and Air Force, and they donate their fees to the charitable cause. The organization contributes money to the Fisher House in Dallas, which provides a home for the families of hospitalized military personnel and veterans. A $14,000 check was presented to Fisher House officials by the foundation for the funds to be used to supply food, linens, gas and other services for residents of the facility. Fishing Report from TPWD (May 1)

EXCELLENT. Slightly stained; 75 degrees; 0.43 feet above pool. The hybrid striped bass and white bass have made a full recovery from the spawn and are now back in the main lake in droves and are on a feeding frenzy! Look for heavy bird activity throughout the lake on flats and near the Dam on edges of drop offs especially on cloudy and overcast days. The hybrids and white bass have started schooling in water from 4-14 feet at the dam and any wind blown shallow point or seawall. Late evening schooling action is also happening in shallow coves and points throughout the lake. Reports of great catches using silver or white slabs and spinners and retrieving off the bottom at a very slow retrieve to catch these fish in depths of 8-16 feet of water. The crappie have also migrated back into the main lake. Look for them under bridge pylons or under docks where the depths are between 3-10 feet. Guides have been reporting exceptionally nice catches on sunny warmer days. Report by Brent Herbeck, Herbeck’s Lonestar Fishing Guide Service. Catfish are excellent the first couple hours of the day on retaining walls where the shad are spawning using fresh cut or whole shad on a bobber or with a light weight. The bite slows as the day progresses because the catfish are feeding heavily at first light. Later in the day target catfish on the first drop-offs in 5-15 feet of water. Report by Jason Barber, Kings Creek Adventures.
