Whisper, an eight-year-old gray tabby cat, lived happily at the Tri-County Library for eight years, much to the delight of staff and patrons. Everyone expected Whisper to live out her days at the library.

Then the Mabank City Council took over the operation of the library from a 25-year-old nonprofit organization that founded it. The council ordered Whisper's removal from the library by Oct. 1.

Whisper, who was named via a library contest when she was kitten, was rescued from the Humane Society of Cedar Creek Lake in Tool. She was recommended for adoption by Sydney Busch of Friends to the Animals. which has provided for her food and veterinary needs, because of her gentleness.

Patrons, especially children, delighted in seeing Whisper in the library, and they held birthday parties for her that included kitty gifts.

When the library closed for weekends and holidays, a Mabank volunteer took her home, and she returned Whisper when the library reopened.

City officials said they ordered Whisper's removal from the library because she represented a liability to the city. Whisper might scratch or bite someone, and the city could get sued, they said.

Several people complained to the council about the decision, and Mayor Jeff Norman said Whisper's residency will be placed on the November meeting's agenda.
