TOOL -- Cedar Creek Lake offers a great opportunity for motorcycle enthusiasts to enjoy a good ride, but it can also be dangerous.
That's why Gary Schnelle, president of Leathernecks Motorcycle Club, asked Tool officials for help in urging other motorists to be aware of their presence on the road and exercise caution. The club is made up of former Marines who enjoy motorcycle riding.
"We're more difficult to see," Schnelle said. "We're just asking drivers to watch out for us."
The Tool City Council agreed and declared May "Motorcycle Awareness Month" in a proclamation recently.
Signs will be posted in Tool that say, "Share the Road, Watch for Motorcycles, We Watch For You ... Thank You, Confederation of Clubs and Independents"
According to "Motorcycle Accident Statistics: The Fatal Dangers of Riding," 47 percent of motorcycle accidents result in fatalities after the riders are struck by other vehicles. More than half of the fatal accidents are caused when the other vehicle is turning left, and 75% of them are caused by the drivers failing to see the motorcycle.
