The biggest murder mystery to ever be seen in Kaufman County and the Cedar Creek Lake area came to a close with the arrests this week of a married couple.
Kaufman County Sheriff David Byrnes announced that Eric Lyle Williams,46, and Kim Lene Williams, 46, were arrested on capital murder charges in connection with the slayings of Assistant District Attorney Mark Hasse on Jan. 31 and District Attorney Mike McLelland and his wife, Cynthia, on March 30.
Eric Williams is being held on bonds totaling $23 million for capital murder and making a terroristic threat, and Kim Williams is being held on a $10 million bond for her role in the murders.
Eric Williams allegedly shot all three of the victims to death, and his wife allegedly accompanied him to both crime sites. Kim Williams allegedly helped her husband plan the murders.
The motive was retaliation, according to the sheriff. Williams, a former justice of the peace, was prosecuted by Hasse and McLelland on a charge of theft of county-owned computer equipment. He received two years probation, but he lost his job and his license to practice law as a result of the conviction in March 2012.
Investigators pursued several theories in the murder investigation, including ones that suggested the prosecutors were the victims of a white supremacist gang or drug traffickers.
Information provided by friends of Williams' led to the discovery of evidence that tied him to the crimes, according to the arrest warrant affidavit.
Byrnes said he had no information about whether anyone provided information in exchange for the $200,000 award being offered by Crime Stoppers and Gov. Rick Perry's office.
Byrnes said that he is now aware of only one other unsolved murder on Kaufman County's books, and he said that residents and public officials could feel more secure now that the Williams are jailed.
