ATHENS -- The Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center will host the "Athens Eggfest" on April 13, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Experienced outdoor cooks are known as eggheads, and they will be preparing a variety of foods on Big Green Eggs, which are ceramic cookers that allow grilling, smoking, baking or frying.
Food prepared by the eggheads will be turned out for sampling all day, starting with breakfast foods in the morning and graduating to other types of foods as the day goes on.
Eggheads from across the state will be participating in the event. It is an opportunity to taste foods cooked outdoors on the ceramic cookers and to learn how to do it.
"If you taste something you would like to know more about, by all means ask the cook," said Leroy McMillin, an egghead from Spring. "All eggheads love to share information. Nothing is off limits. There are no secrets. We gladly share what we know."
If you like what you see and taste, you can take one of the Big Green Eggs home. All of the ceramic cookers used at the event will be sold at big discounts at day's end.
The ceramic cookers will be cooled off, and cleaned up for transport home. They weigh about 150 pounds and can fit into a SUV or pickup truck bed easily.
Big Green Egg accessories also will be available for sale.

The fee for tasting is $5 for those who preregister. Entry at the fisheries center gate for tasting will be $10. All proceeds will benefit the Friends of Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center.
The event is sponsored by Morrison Supply, Paragon Distributing, Brookshire's Grocery and the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center.
