MABANK -- Area residents will observe an annual tradition in late June that predates the construction of Cedar Creek Lake.
The Mabank 58th Rodeo & Western Week scheduled for June 24-29 began in the mid-1950s, 10 years before the Cedar Creek Lake reservoir was built. Mabank then consisted only of a little downtown area with a movie house, a bank, small food and retail stores and a cafe or two.
It is sort of like a return to their roots for those oldtimers from Mabank who remember when the Cedar Creek Lake area was an agricultural region only, and farm animals and cowboys were a far more common site.
The Western Week will give oldtimers and their descendants a chance to celebrate their heritage and for newcomers to take part and enjoy it too.
The rodeo, whick will be staged nightly at the Andrew Gibbs Memorial Arena at 8 p.m.,will feature calf roping, breakaway roping, saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling, team roping, ladies open barrel riding, bull riding, bareback riding, ranch bronc riding and a calf scramble.
On Tuesday, June 25th, there will be games and bed races at the Mabank Pavilion at 6:30 p.m. There will be a parade on Saturday, June 29th,at 5 p.m., with line-up beginning at 4 p.m.
On Saturday night there will be a dance after the rodeo at the Mabank Pavilion. The rodeo grounds are off Business 175 in Mabank and the pavilion is in the public park.
