MABANK -- Nearly a year has passed since Bill Boyd, 82, owner of Old Friends died, and the antique store he so loved recently was transformed into a beauty salon.
Total Look II Full Service Hair and Nail Salon is open for business, and it has left Boyd's motto, "Old Friends are the Best Friends" in the window.
The salon operators said the most frequent question they get when customers come in to their new location from their former one down the street is, "What happened to the cat?"
They are referring to Dexter, the giant yellow tabby that lived in the antique store and was Boyd's constant daytime companion. Although Boyd's unique store was filled with the treasures he spent a lifetime collecting, Dexter tended to catch everybody's eye first.
Not to worry, said Teresa French, an antique furniture restoration specialist who worked with Boyd and was planning on teaching classes at the store when Boyd became ill and died. Dexter now lives at her house.
"He is Lord and King of the Cats," said French. "He gets everything he wants, especially sunshine on the front porch and lots of food."
French said that she wouldn't mind opening her own antique store some day, and if she does you can bet Dexter will help her run it.
Boyd, whom the salon operators say they feel might still be around and happy about what is going on, would no doubt be especially happy to hear that.
