SEVEN POINTS -- It's art appreciation time again as the Humane Society of Cedar Creek Lake gears up for its third annual art auction Saturday, March 10 at the Library of Cedar Creek Lake.
Art is meant for viewing so area animal welfare volunteers are hoping lake residents will donate their extra art that is gathering dust in closets and attics to the animal shelter benefit.
Auction volunteers say they are interested in receiving donations of framed art work, sculptures, photography, tapestry and quilts, jewelry, small antiques, wood carvings, stained glass and other decorative pieces.
Economic times remain tough on the lake, and there is no end in sight to the conditions that have caused struggling residents to abandon pets in increasingly greater numbers. To continue caring for homeless animals at a time when donations are on a decline, shelter officials are becoming more dependent on creative efforts like the art auction to make ends meet.
There are an average of about 125 animals, including both dogs and cats, in residence at the shelter at all times. Every animal adopted out is quickly replaced by another one being brought in by either animal control workers collecting strays or residents who are relinquishing their pets.
Shelter officials say they are forced to euthanize animals every week because they are unable to adopt them out.
Roxy, pictured below, is one such homeless dog who has been in residence at the shelter for about a year. On a recent visit, Roxy, pictured below, could hardly sit still long enough to be photographed because she was begging to be petted and to get to play for a little while outside of her cage.
Roxy, who is three-years-old, came to the shelter as a stray and shortly afterwards gave birth to 15 puppies. All of her puppies were adopted, but Roxy has not been so lucky.
Roxy is a friendly, husky dog of medium height. She walks well on a leash, and she responds well to basic commands. She would be a great companion and watch dog for someone.
She is available for adoption, or she could reside in a foster home. Her time limit for residing at the shelter has already passed so it is critical that she find a permanent or temporary home soon.
Anyone wanting to adopt or foster Roxy should call Krista McAnally at 903-432-3422. Anyone wanting to donate to the art auction should also call Krista or Sue Hisle at 903-887-2234.
Cash donations are also greatly welcomed from anyone who is unable to care for an animal or donate to the art auction.
