Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch near Murchison will host its 2016 Fall Open House on Saturday, Oct. 15 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The 1,400-acre ranch is a sanctuary protecting about 1,000 animals that include chimpanzees, horses, burros, bobcats, iguanas, tortoises, antelope, ostriches, American bison, tigers and other species. The newest addition to the ranch are three pigs rescued from a farm in upstate New York.
Author and animal advocate Cleveland Amory founded the ranch in 1979. Most of the animals were rescued from slaughterhouses, biomedical research laboratories and trophy hunting ranches. Famed actress Doris Day is also a patron of the ranch.
The ranch, which includes the Doris Day Equine Center, opens to the public twice each year for tours.
The day-long event will host hay rides, bus tours, children's table, educational and advocacy table, refreshments and snacks, and information about volunteer and internships at the sanctuary.
Admission is free to the open house. Hayrides and bus tours are optional, and cost $10 per person.
Black Beauty Ranch is a non-profit organization, and all donations are tax-deductible.
Children of all ages are welcome. Pets are not allowed.
