Early voting runs from April 29 through May 7, municipal election day May 11; only 5% turnout expected




Early voting in the municipalities surrounding Cedar Creek Lake starts April 29 and runs through May 7. Election day is May 11. Municipal elections tend to be the least attended by voters with an estimated turnout of only about 5 percent of registered voters. The scheduled elections include positions for mayor and city council in Eustace, Gun Barrel City, Kemp, Log Cabin, Malakoff and three board of director seats in Kemp Independent School District. In Eustace, Chris Wood, Randy Johnson and H.A. Graves are vying for two seats. Mayor Elicia Sanders has no challenger. In Gun Barrel City, Marty Goss, Place 1; Curtis Webster, Place 3 and Rodney Bevill, Place 5 all have no challengers. But there are eight propositions on the ballot for voters to consider. To read the propositions visit this site In Kemp, Mayor Donald Kile is being challenged by current Councilwoman Laura Peace, Barry Lummus has no challenger in Place 2 and Tommy McSpedden is being challenged by Christi Neal in Place 4. Also in Kemp, voters will decide if the 1/4 percent sales tax allotment should be dedicated to street maintenance for four more years. In Log Cabin, Mayor Lawrence Nolan is being challenged by Ruben Manning and Thomas Garret, Fred Cheek, Renee Davis, J.D. Helton and Aaron Scott are competing for two seats on the council. In Malakoff, Mayor Delois Pagitt is running unopposed and Tim Trimble, Jeanette King and Ricky Lane Baker Jr. are competing for two seats on the council. Caney City, Mabank, Star Harbor, Eustace Independent School District and Mabank Independent School District all cancelled elections because of no challenges. Voting takes place at the city halls in all of the cities except for Kemp and KISD, where ballots will be available at Kaufman County Subcourthouses. On Election Day, Kemp and KISD voters will vote at the First Baptist Church in Kemp. Henderson County voters for KISD will vote at the Calvary Baptist Church. The polls are open on Election Day, May 11 for 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. For early voting, the polls are open during regular business hours and there are some extended days.
