Early voting underway on Cedar Creek Lake; residents watch Tarrant County election

Early voting is underway on Cedar Creek Lake for multiple county, city and school board races in advance of the May 9 general election.

Voters will also determine the fate of a $3 million proposed bond for capital improvements in Malakoff Independent School District. Payne Springs voters will decide whether to renew a quarter-percent sales tax dedicated to road repair.

Caney City, Eustace, Gun Barrel City, Mabank, Star Harbor and Tool will be deciding who takes City County seats, including the position of mayor Eustace, Mabank and Tool.

Although only registered voters in Tarrant County can decide who will prevail in the race for two seats on the Tarrant Regional Water District Board of Directors, many Cedar Creek Lake residents are also following that election.

TRWD owns Cedar Creek Lake Reservoir, and its board's decisions impact local lake life. Historically low key, the race for the two water board seats has grown expensive and ugly.

Two incumbents on the Tarrant Regional Water District Board of Directors will fend off challenges from three other candidates in the May 9 election.

Incumbents Martha "Marty" Leonard, a business woman, and Jim Lane, an attorney and former Fort Worth City Council member, will face newcomers Michele Von Luckner, a home health administrator, Craig Bickley, and engineer, and Keith Annis, a consultant and former Tarrant County Democratic Party official.

A fourth challenger, Andra Beatty, a real estate broker, announced her candidacy, but she later withdrew from the race. Beatty announced she would throw her support behind Von Luckner and Bickley.

Leonard and Lane have held their seats on the board since 2006. The upcoming election is anticipated to be bitterly fought as was seen in 2013 when newcomer Mary Kelleher upset longtime incumbent Hal Sparks' tenure.

Supporters of Leonard and Lane posted this announcement. See the link at http://www.owof-tarrant.com/dallas-puppets/

The counter arguments can be viewed at http://trwdcorruption.com/

Kelleher has been an outspoken critic of TRWD, and she is allied with two of the challengers, Von Luckner and Bickley. She has called for more transparent operation of the water district, and the seating of Von Luckner and Bickely would build a new majority vote on the five-member board.

Kelleher is critical of the administration of the water district by General Manager Jim Oliver. She said she wants the water district to focus on its duty to provide water to North Texans, rather than expanding economic development in Tarrant County.

Annis is also critical of TRWD's plans. Critics of TRWD claim that management operates in secrecy and spends money lavishly on questionable expenses.

A request for a response to the criticism by CedarCreekLake.com went unanswered by TRWD officials when former Texas Rep. Lance Gooden raised questions about the agency late in 2014.

At issue is the Trinity River Vision, which includes the development of multiple Trinity River waterfront projects.

Lane said he wants to return to the board to see the completion of the planned Integrated Pipeline Project and the TRV. Leonard has also spoken in favor of the two projects.

Cedar Creek Lake

Fishing Report from TPWD (Apr. 24)

EXCELLENT. Slightly stained; 70 degrees; 0.40 feet above pool. Hybrid striped bass and white bass have made a full recovery from the spawn and are now back in the main lake in droves and are on a feeding frenzy. Look for heavy bird activity throughout the lake on flats and near the dam on edges of drop offs especially on cloudy and overcast days. The Hybrids and Whitebass have started schooling in water from 6-14 feet at the dam and any wind blown shallow point or seawall. Late evening schooling action is also happening in shallow coves and points throughout the lake. Reports of great catches using silver or white slabs and spinnerbaits and retrieving off the bottom at a very slow retrieve to catch these fish in depths of 8-16 feet of water. The crappie have also migrated back into the main lake. Look for them under bridge pylons or under docks where the depths are between 3-10 feet. Guides have been reporting exceptionally nice catches on sunny warmer days. Report by Brent Herbeck, Herbeck’s Lonestar Fishing Guide Service.
