GUN BARREL CITY -- Radio stations nationwide are interviewing Mayor Paul Eaton about the city's passage of a resolution supporting the right of heads of household to own guns.
Eaton said this week he is glad to do it because the city wants to reach out to weapons and ammunition factories and retailers. That was the plan all along when the City Council passed the resolution in support of the Second Amendment on April 23, he said.
After the local media reported the council's action, the Dallas media picked it up and it "went viral" in the following two weeks, according to city officials.
The city's logo featuring a pair of crossed pistols and the motto "We Shoot Straight" helps with the pitch, Eaton said.
The city has an abundance of vacant commercial real estate that could support the industry, Eaton said.
City Manager Gerry Boren said he has also reached out to the industry, inviting them to take a look at the area.
The local action coincides with a similar pitch being made by Texas Gov. Rick Perry who has written letters to the industry.
Boren said that public opinion seems to be in about 70 percent favor of what city officials want to do, according to what he has observed on the social media.
