Kayaking at Purtis Creek State Park

It's kayak day at Purtis Creek State Park Aug. 9.

Free kayak classes will be held that Saturday from 9 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. You can take your own kayak with you or use one of the park's kayaks. The class will focus on getting use to kayaks and paddling them. Games will be played.

Wear clothing that you don't mind getting wet and meet at the boat ramp. The class is free with paid admission to the park at the entrance.

After you learn how to paddle a kayak, return to the park at 8:30 p.m. for a guided tour of the coves of Purtis Creek. The tour cost is $12 per person for use of a park kayak or you can take your own kayak.

Reservations are required for the morning kayak class, and reservations and pre-payment are required for the night tour. Call 903-425-2332 or email [email protected].

The park is at 14225 FM 316, Eustace, TX 75124.

Cedar Creek Lake

Fishing Report from TPWD (Sep. 3)

EXCELLENT. Water stained; 84 degrees; 1.06 feet below pool. Catfish are good on main lake humps and flats in 12-24 feet on cut shad and other usual baits like shrimp or prepared baits. A lot of shad moving back in creeks, other fish will later follow. Drifting larger cut bait is best for bigger fish. Report by Jason Barber, Kings Creek Adventures. Consistently finding the best action in 13-18 feet of water. Good go-to setups include a variety of slabs, spinners and the always-reliable yellow bladed Bo Blade spinner using the proven saw tooth retrieve technique. Trolling pet spoons with a hellbender set-up at 3 mph in 13–17 feet of water is absolutely crushing the white bass on several humps throughout the lake. Report by Brent Herbeck, Herbeck’s Lonestar Fishing Guide Service.
