New lakeside restaurant, club opening on island causeway; familiar face to be host

It's been a while since Cedar Creek Lake residents could dine and entertain at a lakeside restaurant and club, but that will all change about mid-April. Coconut, a full-service restaurant and nightclub, will open in the old Beijing Garden restaurant on the causeway island along HIghway 334 between Seven Points and Gun Barrel City. Construction and remodeling is now underway. Visitors to the Coconut will see a familiar face. Lew Talbot, former owner of Cedar Isle, will be the general manager of the restaurant and club, and he is overseeing the renovation of the building. Talbot's popular restaurant and nightclub Cedar Isle burned in an accidental fire December 2012, and Cedar Creek Lake residents have missed both him and his entertainment venue ever since. Talbot said he plans for Coconut to be as popular as Cedar Isle. Boat docks will be soon be constructed at the new venue for lake residents and weekenders who want to boat in for an afternoon or evening of good food and fun. "It will be similar to what we had at Cedar Isle," Talbot said. There will be a large covered deck facing the water where visitors can dine and socialize. Coconut will be a restaurant by day and convert to a dinner nightclub at night. The food will be American, featuring seafood, steaks and sandwiches on the menu. The inside dining room and bar will be non-smoking. There will be live music with a band playing every Saturday night, just like in the old days at Cedar Isle. A large horseshoe bar will be the centerpiece of the building. By the time Coconut opens in April, it will be repainted inside and out and decorated with a lake theme. The restaurant has been vacant for about a decade. It was purchased last year by a Dallas-Fort Worth investor who hired Talbot as general manager. Talbot said he has big plans for Coconut that he believes will appeal to the lake community. "I'm going to be here for a long time," he said. Coconut will also feature a private banquet room for parties and meetings. The restaurant will have a family-friendly atmosphere. Talbot said he is excited about getting back to work entertaining lake residents, weekenders and other visitors. All of the feedback about the new operation is encouraging, he said. "Everyone is going crazy with excitement when they hear I'm going to do this," Talbot said. "We are going to have a huge summer." Cedar Creek Lake Water Level (last 30 days)

Water Level on 8/2: 321.32 (-0.68)

Cedar Creek Lake

Fishing Report from TPWD (Jul. 30)

GOOD. Water slightly stained; 85 degrees; 0.40 feet above pool. Water level is 3 inches low. Big numbers of white bass and several trophy-class hybrid stripers have hit the deck. There is consistent action in 15-22 feet of water. A good go-to setup includes a variety of slabs, spinnerbaits and the always-reliable yellow bladed Bo Blade spinner using the proven saw tooth retrieve technique. Trolling spoons with a hellbender set up at 3 mph in 13-17 feet of water is absolutely crushing the white bass. Water temperatures are currently holding around 83-86 degrees and will continue to rise as summer heats up over the next couple of weeks. Report by Brent Herbeck, Herbeck's Lonestar Fishing Guide Service. Catfish are good anchoring on main lake humps and points in 13-24 feet, or drifting flat areas in 10-20 feet. Report by Jason Barber, Kings Creek Adventures.
