New Cedar Creek Lake area Walmart grocery store announces grand opening in Kemp

The eagerly anticipated Walmart Neighborhood Market on Highway 274 in Kemp will be showcased in a grand opening Wednesday, March 4 at 7:30 a.m.

City of Kemp officials, including Mayor Laura Hanna Peace, will be on hand for the opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony. Peace said she is thrilled by the store's opening because Kemp residents will no longer be forced to travel 10 miles or more to buy fresh produce and meats.

"We have needed this for so long," Peace said. "I am so happy to see this store opening."

The new store is at 221 S. State Highway 274 across from the Kemp High School. It will be open Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. The store will provide Kemp residents with low prices on a broad assortment of merchandise including fresh produce and meats, frozen foods, groceries and pharmacy products. The store will include a fuel station.

Customers can shop additional items including toys, electronics and home decor on Walmart.com through Walmart pickup, which will offer free shipping to the Kemp Walmart Neighborhood Market.

“We are excited about bringing this new format to Kemp,” said store manager Adrian Morones. “Our customers will be pleased with the convenient grab-and-go setup of the store accompanied by Walmart’s low prices.”

The new store offers fresh produce and a full line of groceries from leading brand names. By working with growers Walmart is able to provide farm-grown quality produce at added convenience and low prices. There is also a wide variety of meat and bakery selections.

The new store is approximately 12,000 square feet and offers a wide assortment to meet the needs of Kemp residents. In addition to groceries, the store features health and beauty aids, pet products and cleaning supplies. Shopping is more convenient than ever as Kemp residents can shop an assortment of 7 million items on Walmart.com, many of which can be shipped for free to the new Walmart Neighborhood Market.

The pharmacy offers a full range of products and services and pharmacy team members are ready to assist customers with product and prescription questions. Kemp residents can easily transfer prescriptions and order refills on the go with the Walmart mobile app for iPhone and Android.

The new store employs approximately 30 full- and part-time associates. Store manager Adrian Morones began at Sam’s Club in 2000 as an overnight stocker, and transferred to Walmart in 2009.

The new store will further Walmart’s pledge to fight hunger in America. As part of Walmart’s and the Walmart Foundation’s $2 billion commitment to fight hunger through 2015, Walmart stores in Texas donated approximately 59 million pounds of food, in fiscal year 2014, or the equivalent of 49.2 million meals. Additionally, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation gave more than $110.8 million in fiscal year 2014 in Texas alone. Walmart plans to celebrate the store's opening with residents on Saturday, March 7.  "A Big Family Welcome" will give customers a chance to meet the manager,  Morones, and enjoy fun family activities such as face painting, cupcake decorating and free food samples while supplies last. Join the celebration from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Fishing Report from TPWD (Apr. 24)

EXCELLENT. Slightly stained; 70 degrees; 0.40 feet above pool. Hybrid striped bass and white bass have made a full recovery from the spawn and are now back in the main lake in droves and are on a feeding frenzy. Look for heavy bird activity throughout the lake on flats and near the dam on edges of drop offs especially on cloudy and overcast days. The Hybrids and Whitebass have started schooling in water from 6-14 feet at the dam and any wind blown shallow point or seawall. Late evening schooling action is also happening in shallow coves and points throughout the lake. Reports of great catches using silver or white slabs and spinnerbaits and retrieving off the bottom at a very slow retrieve to catch these fish in depths of 8-16 feet of water. The crappie have also migrated back into the main lake. Look for them under bridge pylons or under docks where the depths are between 3-10 feet. Guides have been reporting exceptionally nice catches on sunny warmer days. Report by Brent Herbeck, Herbeck’s Lonestar Fishing Guide Service.
