Convicted killer, former Kaufman County JP heads back to death row

Former Kaufman County Justice of the Peace Eric Williams will be returned to death row to await execution in connection with three murders committed in 2013.

Visiting Judge Webb Biard denied Williams' request for a new trial March 2. The former law enforcement official and attorney claimed diabetes so damaged his brain he should not be found guilty for murder.

A jury in Rockwall County, where his trial was moved on a change of venue, found Williams guilty in December of the murder of Cynthia McLelland, wife of former District Attorney Mike McLelland who was also shot to death in their Forney home March 30, 2013, on Easter Eve.

Former District Attorney Mark Hasse was killed Jan 31, 2013.

Prosecutors alleged Williams killed the trio out of revenge for his prosecution and conviction in 2012 for stealing county property. Williams was tried only in connection with Mrs. McLelland's murder.

Williams' wife, Kim, testified against him in the trial. She received 40 years in prison for her role in the killings

The Kaufman County murders were the subject of an NBC Dateline episode Feb. 27. Other national broadcastig networks also filmed in Kaufman recently, and those shows will be aired sometime this year.

Fishing Report from TPWD (Jun. 11)

GOOD. Water slightly stained; 81 degrees; 0.46 feet above pool. The hybrid striped bass and white bass bite is on fire and with fish on a feeding frenzy! Start looking for these fish on flats throughout the lake and on edges of drop-offs, especially on cloudy and overcast days. Focus on drop-offs and along seawalls early in the mornings in 5-14 feet of water with slabs. Reports of great catches in 17–26 feet of water using silver or white slabs and spinnerbaits off the bottom with a very slow retrieve. The crappie have also migrated back into the main lake. Look for fish under bridge pylons or under docks in 3-10 feet. Guides have been reporting exceptionally nice catches on sunny warmer days. Report by Brent Herbeck, Herbeck’s Lonestar Fishing Guide Service. Numbers of catfish can be caught targeting humps in 10-20 feet of water, but there are a lot of small fish. Bigger fish can be caught drifting cut shad, carp, drum or bream. Report by Jason Barber, Kings Creek Adventures.
