Dollar General to open new store in Tool on Hwy 274

Dollar General will open its newest store on Cedar Creek Lake in Tool within the year.

The store is expected to generate $1.2 million in sales annually, according to the corporation's representatives.

The store will carry name brand products, and it will be open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. It will employ five to 10 people from the area.

The Tool City Council approved the rezoning of two acres of property at Highway 274 and Kon Tiki Drive from residential to commercial recently over the objections of the Malakoff Independent School District. School officials said they feared the opening of a retail store next to Tool Elementary School would post a public safety threat to students because of increased traffic.

City officials said they would not approve the sale of alcoholic beverages at the store because of its proximity to a school and church.

Dollar General representatives said the corporation had spent significant time researching the market to pick the site, and it would not consider another location in Tool.

Dollar General promised the store would be built if the rezoning was approved.

Several residents spoke in favor of the store opening in Tool because of the convenience, and they said school officials' concerns seemed unwarranted.

The seller of the property said she was surprised by the oppostion of school officials.

Fishing Report from TPWD (May 28)

GOOD. stained; 77 degrees; 0.24 feet above pool. The hybrid striped bass and white bass have made a full recovery from the spawn and are now back in the main lake in droves and are on a feeding frenzy! Start looking for heavy bird activity throughout the lake on flats and near the Dam on edges of drop offs especially on cloudy and overcast days. Focus on using slabs on drop offs and along seawalls early in the mornings in depth of 5-14 feet. Reports of great catches using silver or white slabs and spinners and retrieving off the bottom at a very slow retrieve to catch these fish in depths of 17-26 feet of water. The crappie have also migrated back into the main lake. Look for them under bridge pylons or under docks where the depths are between 3-10 feet. Guides have been reporting exceptionally nice catches on sunny warmer days. Report by Brent Herbeck, Herbeck’s Lonestar Fishing Guide Service. Catfish are good on humps in 5-20 feet on fresh shad, or drifting in 15-25 feet of water for bigger fish. Report by Jason Barber, Kings Creek Adventures.
