Don's Port Marina closes again; bank to sell property

(UPDATE: Here is an update via email from Wendy Harrington at Don's Port. "The boat ramp is open, The slip rental is open, the store is open... Several things have been suspended due to lowering lake levels, the gas dock, the restaurant and renting boats. We are in search of a new owner, but we are open.") It seemed almost too good to be true when Don's Port Marina managed to reopen in 2012 after closing the previous year due to the disastrous drought. It apparently was too good to be true and now that the lake is once again dropping precariously as it did in the summer of 2011, the facility again has ceased operation. The lake is now five feet below full and presumably headed for the more than eight feet below or worse that it reached two years ago. The owners, Terry and Jenny Scott, closed the doors of the marina and the Tiki Hut Restaurant last week. They posted a handwritten note in the window of the door. "The drought has finally taken its toll," the note reads. The Scotts operated the marina for seven years. The note indicates that Pavillion Bank of Richardson will be selling the marina and the restaurant. There will be no fuel sales or boat repairs, but boats in slips and storage can remain there indefinitely. Anyone wanting information about buying the marina should call the bank at 972-380-0700 or e-mail [email protected].

Fishing Report from TPWD (Jun. 18)

GOOD. Water slightly stained; 86 degrees; 0.20 feet above pool. Hybrid striped bass and white bass bite is on fire while fish continue to be in a feeding frenzy. Focus on flats throughout the lake and on edges of drop-offs, especially on cloudy and overcast days. Use slabs on drop-offs and along seawalls early in the mornings in depth of 5-14 feet. Reports of great catches using silver or white slabs and spinners and retrieving off the bottom at a very slow retrieve to catch these fish in depths of 17-26 feet of water. The crappie have also migrated back into the main lake. Look for them under bridge pylons or under docks where the depths are between 3-10 feet. Guides have been reporting exceptionally nice catches on sunny warmer days. Report by Brent Herbeck, Herbeck’s Lonestar Fishing Guide Service. Catfish remain consistent targeting humps in 10-20 feet of water, but there are a lot of small fish. Bigger fish can be caught drifting cut shad, carp, drum or bream. Report by Jason Barber, Kings Creek Adventures.
