Henderson County Livestock Show coming up

The 56th annual Henderson County Livestock Show is scheduled for April 4-9.

Livestock show officials say they are ready for the most exciting week of the year for all the FFA and 4H members in Henderson County. Another year of feeding, walking, grooming and caring for animal projects comes to an end.  Months of welding, cutting and fabricating shop projects are over and it’s time for the judging to begin, they noted.

Local businesses have pledged to be gate sponsors so there will be no gate fees to pay to enter the fairgrounds. The sponsors are:

Monday/Tuesday – AquaTexas
Wednesday – Mooyah & Schlotzskys
Thursday – Lone Star Western Wear
Friday – Benson’s Eats and Treats

In 2015 the show held its first Senior Student Night Reception, with Walmart providing food and supplies and Jeff Cade donating his catering services to prepare and serve the meal. This year, Jeff Cade will be cooking again and Elder Dodge will be sponsoring the reception.

Volunteers plan and put on the show.

General membership meetings take place on the second Monday of every odd numbered month, at the Trinity Valley Community College Agricultural Building on the TVCC Main Campus.

Mission Statement:

The purpose of this Association shall be to educate the residents, particularly the young people of Henderson County, Texas, and surrounding communities on the agricultural industry by conducting public fairs and exhibitions. The purpose shall be realized by working with County Agents, Family Consumer Sciences Agents, Ag Science teachers, 4-H leaders and 4-H, FFA, and FCCLA youth; and by conducting demonstrations on farm life, including agricultural techniques, farm equipment, livestock exhibits and other projects, with explanations of such exhibits provided by trained persons. Contests shall be held and prizes awarded to exhibitors showing the best projects in categories aimed at obtaining the interest of young people in agriculture and educating them in the newest and best techniques of farming, livestock raising and homemaking.

Fishing Report from TPWD (May 21)

EXCELLENT. stained; 77 degrees; 0.02 feet full pool. The hybrid striped bass and white bass have made a full recovery from the spawn and are now back in the main lake in droves and are on a feeding frenzy! Start looking for heavy bird activity throughout the lake on flats and near the Dam on edges of drop offs especially on cloudy and overcast days. Focus on using slabs on drop offs and along seawalls early in the mornings in depth of 5-14 feet. Reports of great catches using silver or white slabs and spinners and retrieving off the bottom at a very slow retrieve to catch these fish in depths of 17-26 feet of water. The crappie have also migrated back into the main lake. Look for them under bridge pylons or under docks where the depths are between 3-10 feet. Guides have been reporting exceptionally nice catches on sunny warmer days. Report by Brent Herbeck, Herbeck’s Lonestar Fishing Guide Service. Shad spawn is nearing an end, but there continues to be a good early shallow bite on and around points and windy shoreline. Drifting in 15-25 feet of water is consistently producing bigger fish. Report by Jason Barber, Kings Creek Adventures. As we enjoy a weekend of fishing we salute and honor our Nation’s heroes this Memorial Day. Anticipate increased recreational boater traffic this weekend.
