Long Cove, Buxton Marina host hole-in-one competition

Long Cove hosted residents and Cedar Creek Lake community  members for a day of family fun and prizes at one of Texas’ most scenic retreats on April 15, 2017.

Families and friends enjoyed an Easter egg hunt, a live five-piece band, carnival style games, face painting and a petting zoo at the community’s annual Spring Fling before heading to The Proving Grounds, Long Cove’s par-3 practice range, for the inaugural hole-in-one competition.

The event was sponsored by Buxton Marine and emceed by former WFAA sportscaster George Riba. Guests enjoyed complimentary refreshments and warm treats from The Beignet Bus while golfers ages 10 and under vied for prizes, including a hoverboard and remote controlled boat, in a putting competition. Golfers ages 11 through 15 also tried their luck in a chipping competition for the chance to win a paddle board, drone or Kam Jam game set.

Following the putting and chipping competitions, more than 50 amateur and professional golfers competed for the boat of every lake-goer’s dreams, a Super Air Nautique. Although no competitor was able to win the grand prize by sinking a hole-in-one, a “Close But No Cigar” trophy and YETI cooler were awarded to the golfer who came closest — Bruce Northcutt, a Long Cove homeowner from The Woodlands, Texas.

Fishing Report from TPWD (Jul. 9)

GOOD. Water slightly stained; 85 degrees; 0.26 feet above pool. Big numbers of white bass and several trophy-class hybrid stripers have hit the deck. We are consistently finding the best action in 15–22 feet of water. Good go-to setups include a variety of slabs, sometimes paired with 2–3 jigs above, and the always-reliable yellow bladed jig using the proven saw tooth retrieve technique. Trolling spoons at 3 mph in 13–17 feet of water absolutely crushed the white bass. Water temperatures are currently holding around 83 degrees and will continue to rise as summer heats up over the next couple of weeks. Report by Brent Herbeck, Herbeck’s Lonestar Fishing Guide Service. Fishing patterns remain consistent. Catfish are good anchoring on humps in 12-24 feet using small shad or cut shad on the bottom, or drifting larger cut carp, drum or big gizzard shad on flats in 10-25 feet all around the lake. Report by Jason Barber, Kings Creek Adventures.
