Ask Dr. Fran Lunch and Learn

Dr. Fran and her brand “Ask Dr. Fran” on Facebook, has become a household name here in the Cedar Creek Lake Area.

Francine McCain has a growing OB-GYN practice in Athens near the ETMC hospital facility and promotes most of her marketing on Social Media.

Earlier this month, Dr. Fran held a “Lunch and Learn” at the Athens Country Club where a meal was served while she spoke, she gave direction for advanced female healthcare and what to be watching for as we gain years under our belt in life.

Dr. Fran started off the conference explaining that psychological well being is important for the overall health of a woman. Life events like a child leaving home can lead to feelings of loss, concern for safety and the feeling of “letting go of control” hit home with this talk, as I have 8 daughters. Two are almost 18 and those feelings are real, before those kids even walk out the door to start their own life.

She went on to explain that illness of aging parents who we will need to care for, can leave a woman feeling, awkward, guilt, or another loss of control of our own life. Hitting the psychological well being hard in real life situations such as their own retirement or maybe even a medical condition we are needing to focus on in the current time, might leave us feeling helpless to our parents and life.

Dr. Fran said regarding whole health and well-being, “prevention is key and that is the key to success!”

Meeting with your medical professional is one of the most real and tangible things you can do.

-Make annual exams

-Set your mind with intention, be as specific as possible if you feel something is wrong

-Exercise

And, if all else fails, Dr. Fran suggested to get a pet!!

The top three cancers found in women are Breast, Lung and Colon.

When telling attendees how important mammograms are, she recalled of her recent visit in which she had one done. She was in Washington with her husband on the campaign trail with Lance Gooden and received a phone call from her doctor’s office explaining she had had an abnormal mammogram at her visit. Dr. Fran had thoughts like, “Why am I here… when I have breast cancer!” Going straight to worst case scenario.

She explained that is where her human side went, and she was scared.

Everything turned out ok she, but the feeling was real in the moment.
6 “things” were given that could indicate a higher probability of developing cancer of any kind.

1. Being female
2. Age
3. Early period
4. Family history
5. Tobacco use

Dr. Fran spoke about regular cervical pap smears, exposure to HPV and spent a great deal of time speaking on the types of hysterectomies were available. Also encouraging each woman to speak with their physician and make an appointment with her office if they didn’t have one already.

When she said, “Prevention is Key,” she meant it.

-Cancer Screenings

-Bone Health

-Psychological Health and Wellness

-Lowering risk factors if possible

One last note she left us with is this.

If we are feeling depressed or down and out in any way, decreased sunlight means decreased energy and that is part of the WHY we get down sometimes.

SO, best news yet!! Summer is here and we have plenty of sunlight and Cedar Creek Lake to enjoy so get out of those houses’ ladies and into our community where you can engage and stay healthy!

Fishing Report from TPWD (Jul. 2)

GOOD. Water slightly stained; 87 degrees; 0.07 feet above pool. Big numbers of white bass and several trophy-class hybrid stripers have hit the deck. We are consistently finding the best action in 15–22 feet of water. Good go-to setups include a variety of slabs, sometimes paired with 2–3 jigs above, and the always-reliable yellow bladed jig using the proven saw tooth retrieve technique. Trolling spoons at 3 mph in 13–17 feet of water absolutely crushed the white bass. Water temperatures are currently holding around 83 degrees and will continue to rise as summer heats up over the next couple of weeks. Report by Brent Herbeck, Herbeck’s Lonestar Fishing Guide Service. Catfish are good anchoring on humps in 12-24 feet using small shad or cut shad on the bottom. Drifting larger cut bait like carp, drum or big gizzard shad on flats in 10-25 feet all around the lake. Report by Jason Barber, Kings Creek Adventures. Anticipate increased boater traffic this weekend as we celebrate our Nation’s Independence Day.
