TVEC Annual Essay Contest For Trip To Washington

Trinity Valley Electric coop, as part of the Texas Electric Cooperatives, are doing their annual Government-in-Action Youth Tour contest. Since 2006 Trinity Valley Co-op has participated in “Government-in-Action youth tour program,” to create a, “once in a lifetime” opportunity for kids that might not otherwise be able to afford an informative and educational trip like this with as many places to explore and sights to see.

The 2018 Youth Tour to Washington, D.C. will consist of over 100 students. The kids will be able to visit the Library of Congress, which is said to be the biggest library in the world. The United States Congressional offices in the capitol complex. The tour will make a stop at the Smithsonian Institute, which currently holds some of the most valuable pieces of history. The Arlington National Cemetery and the Washington National Cathedral are two stops in the tour as well. That is not even mentioning the Supreme Court and many special attractions!

It is said that the students are, “afforded the opportunity to see so many monuments, attend a musical at the Kennedy Center, take an evening river cruise on the Potomac River, tour the capital, attend Rural Youth Day and so many more events all packed into nine days.”

The eligibility requirements are quite simple, be in 10th, 11th or 12th grade living in the Trinity Valley Electric Co-op service area, submit a completed application by 5pm on February 5, 2018 and have a 2 page essay explaining in detail why electric cooperatives are important in today’s world.

Applications are available for download on the company website under the youth services. They will need to be printed and mailed in.

Two students with the winning essays will be chosen by a panel of judges, who come from across the state of Texas, win a nine-day, all-expense paid trip to visit Washington D.C... Bobbi Byford, TVEC Manager of Public Relations will be joining this year making this her seventh tour as a chaperone.

The contest is now open with deadline approaching on February 5, 2018 at 5pm.

Fishing Report from TPWD (Jul. 9)

GOOD. Water slightly stained; 85 degrees; 0.26 feet above pool. Big numbers of white bass and several trophy-class hybrid stripers have hit the deck. We are consistently finding the best action in 15–22 feet of water. Good go-to setups include a variety of slabs, sometimes paired with 2–3 jigs above, and the always-reliable yellow bladed jig using the proven saw tooth retrieve technique. Trolling spoons at 3 mph in 13–17 feet of water absolutely crushed the white bass. Water temperatures are currently holding around 83 degrees and will continue to rise as summer heats up over the next couple of weeks. Report by Brent Herbeck, Herbeck’s Lonestar Fishing Guide Service. Fishing patterns remain consistent. Catfish are good anchoring on humps in 12-24 feet using small shad or cut shad on the bottom, or drifting larger cut carp, drum or big gizzard shad on flats in 10-25 feet all around the lake. Report by Jason Barber, Kings Creek Adventures.
