KAUFMAN -- The murder of Kaufman County District Attorney Mike McLelland and his wife Cynthia over the weekend has left the entire state in shock.
It is particularly bewildering to residents of Kaufman County -- which includes part of the Cedar Creek lake area -- who find it hard to believe such a crime against an elected official could be carried out in the rural East Texas area.
With the murder just two months ago of McLelland's chief district attorney, Mark Hasse, in a parking lot outside of the courthouse fresh on everyone's mind, the situation becomes almost surreal.
There are no suspects so far in either murder, despite the reward for information leading to the indictment and conviction of Hasse's killers having grown to $130,000 at this point.
The Kaufman County Courthouse, which is about 15 miles from Cedar Creek Lake, opened today with heavy security present. Armed guards walked many county employees into the courthouse from the parking lot, and law enforcement officials called annex offices regularly to make sure they were safe.
The District Attorney's office did not open to the public today, but it is expected to return to normal operation soon. Brandi Fernandez, McLelland's chief assistant, was appointed acting district attorney.
Texas Gov. Rick Perry is expected to appoint a district attorney soon to fill out McLelland's term. Two applicants, one from Tyler and one from Forney, reportedly have applied for the appointment already.
The FBI, Texas Rangers and U.S. Marshal's Service are assisting Kaufman County Sheriff David Byrnes in the investigation of the murders.
Many people in the area suspect the murders could be linked to organized crime related to drug trafficking.
Investigators declined to comment on the crime scene, but media outlets are reporting shell casings from an assault rifle were found at the McLelland's home in an upscale Forney neighborhood. They appear to have been killed late Friday night, but their bodies weren't discovered until Saturday about 6 p.m.
McLelland, a 23-year Army veteran who was elected in 2010, was shot multiple times, and his wife Cynthia, a psychiatric nurse who worked at Terrell State Hospital was shot once.
