Getting to Cedar Creek Lake from Dallas may become a little easier and quicker in 2015.
The Texas Transportation Commission will consider a proposal by the Texas Department of Transportation to increase the speed on U.S. Highway 175 through Kaufman County to 70 mph. The speed limit is now 60 mph from the Dallas County line through Crandall and 65 mph to the Van Zandt County line.
At the same time the commission will also consider increasing the speed limit on U.S. Highway 80 from the Dallas County line to Spur 557 through Terrell to 70 mph. The speed limit is now 60 mph through Forney and 65 mph through Terrell.
The speed limit on Spur 557 connecting U.S. Highway 80 and Interstate 20 may also be increased to 70 mph from 65 mph.
If approved, new speed limit signs at the increased speed will be installed in the Spring of 2015.
The higher speed limits will reflect a return to previous decades when all major highways in the state allowed speeds of 70 mph.
Speed limits were lowered in previous decades to reduce fuel consumption and to reduce air pollution caused by vehicle emisions.
Speeds on several highways in Texas already allow travel at 70 mph, including a stretch on U.S. Highway 175 from Eustace to Athens.
