The Dead Files, which is an American paranormal television series shown on the Travel Channel, obtained permission from the Kaufman County Commissioners Court to film on the grounds of the Kaufman County Poor Farm recently.
County Judge Bruce Wood said the production company is crisscrossing the nation gathering information about historical sites, and it is now filming in Texas.
A production company researcher recently contacted CedarCreekLake.com asking about historical sites in the area. He was told about the Poor Farm and referred to the historical commission.
The Poor Farm dates back to 1880s when counties across Texas provided assistance to paupers under the directive of state law. Counties assumed the responsibility because the Civil War caused charitable organizations of the time to fail.
Kaufman County purchased land for the Poor Farm in 1881 and errected structures by 1883 to house residents, guards and farm animals. Residents worked on the farm to help take care of themselves if they were physically able to do so.
Today, all that is left of the Poor Farm are a few aging structures near Texas Highway 34 and Farm-to-Market 1388.
It is unclear what the focus of The Dead Files episode about Kaufman County will be, and an airing date is not yet available.
Previous episodes of the series, which debuted in 2011, featured psychic medium Amy Allan former New York City police detective Steve DiSchiavi investigating locations alleged to be haunted attempting to provide proof of paranormal activity.
