Mabank native Mike Hall is one of the growing number of actors, writers and producers basing their careers in Texas rather than Hollywood.
His latest work, an acting role in "The Merchant," can be seen by his hometown relatives and friends at the Mabank Pavilion on Oct. 19 at 7:30 p.m. The free screening of the Western horror movie completed earlier this year will be preceded at 5 p.m. by a red carpet premiere featuring other actors, writer and producer.
It will include free movie posters, actor photographs and autograph signings.
Hall, who has appeared on stage, television and the big screen, lives in Ennis. He spent a year in Los Angeles about a decade ago, but he decided his home state was a better fit for him.
After 20 years acting, Hall said his career is taking off more strongly than ever with substantial work in Texas. He has appeared in episodes of the new "Dallas" television series.
Many others involved in show business are making similar decisions, according to Hall. He notes that the 83rd Texas Legislature tripled the budget of the Texas Moving Image Industry Incentive Program overseen by the Texas Film Commission.
Legislators voted to fund $95 million to the program for grants, tax refunds and tax exemptions during the next two years.
"The Merchant," which is the story of fictional Burning Bush, a rural community fighting evil brought to them by a vagrant local priest, according to the website, http://themerchantmovie.com.
The movie was filmed in Texas in the communities of Gilmer, Sulphur Springs and Beaumont.
Admission to the movie is free, but guests are asked to bring chairs for their use. The violence in the movie makes it unsuitable for children under 13, according to Hall.
