"The Merchant" movie features Mabank native

Mabank native Mike Hall is one of the growing number of actors, writers and producers basing their careers in Texas rather than Hollywood. His latest work, an acting role in "The Merchant," can be seen by his hometown relatives and friends at the Mabank Pavilion on Oct. 19 at 7:30 p.m. The free screening of the Western horror movie completed earlier this year will be preceded at 5 p.m. by a red carpet premiere featuring other actors, writer and producer. It will include free movie posters, actor photographs and autograph signings. Hall, who has appeared on stage, television and the big screen, lives in Ennis. He spent a year in Los Angeles about a decade ago, but he decided his home state was a better fit for him. After 20 years acting, Hall said his career is taking off more strongly than ever with substantial work in Texas. He has appeared in episodes of the new "Dallas" television series. Many others involved in show business are making similar decisions, according to Hall. He notes that the 83rd Texas Legislature tripled the budget of the Texas Moving Image Industry Incentive Program overseen by the Texas Film Commission. Legislators voted to fund $95 million to the program for grants, tax refunds and tax exemptions during the next two years. "The Merchant," which is the story of fictional Burning Bush, a rural community fighting evil brought to them by a vagrant local priest, according to the website, http://themerchantmovie.com. The movie was filmed in Texas in the communities of Gilmer, Sulphur Springs and Beaumont. Admission to the movie is free, but guests are asked to bring chairs for their use. The violence in the movie makes it unsuitable for children under 13, according to Hall. Hall is pictured below.

Fishing Report from TPWD (Jun. 11)

GOOD. Water slightly stained; 81 degrees; 0.46 feet above pool. The hybrid striped bass and white bass bite is on fire and with fish on a feeding frenzy! Start looking for these fish on flats throughout the lake and on edges of drop-offs, especially on cloudy and overcast days. Focus on drop-offs and along seawalls early in the mornings in 5-14 feet of water with slabs. Reports of great catches in 17–26 feet of water using silver or white slabs and spinnerbaits off the bottom with a very slow retrieve. The crappie have also migrated back into the main lake. Look for fish under bridge pylons or under docks in 3-10 feet. Guides have been reporting exceptionally nice catches on sunny warmer days. Report by Brent Herbeck, Herbeck’s Lonestar Fishing Guide Service. Numbers of catfish can be caught targeting humps in 10-20 feet of water, but there are a lot of small fish. Bigger fish can be caught drifting cut shad, carp, drum or bream. Report by Jason Barber, Kings Creek Adventures.
