Upper Neches Paddling Trail opens in Henderson County river

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department opened a paddling trail on the Neches River in Chandler at River Park recently.

It is the first paddling trail to be opened in the area of Henderson and Smith Counties, and it is the 71st in the state. The trail allows canoes and kayaks to traverse the scenic waters of the Neches River.

Prior to the opening of the trail in Chandler, the closest point for river paddling was in Jacksonville on the Neches River. The new trail gives watercraft access to other rivers and waterways in the state.

The trail is a partnership between TPWD and the City of Chandler. East Texas Woods and Water Foundation was instrumental in the creation of the trail.

The trail consists of a one-mile loop going north, a three-mile loop going south or a seven-mile loop into Lake Palestine.

River Park is in the west of Chandler on State Highway 31 on the Neches River. It features a boat ramp and canoe and kayak launch site, a nature walk, covered picnic areas and concession stands with snacks and fishing bait.

For watercraft rentals, call 903-849-2634 to make reservations.

Information is available at www.tpwd.texas.gov/paddling trails.
