With the July 4th Independence Day falling on Wednesday this year, most people will be doing their celebrating on the lake this Saturday, July 7. There is always a spectacular fireworks display over the lake and just about any venue around the lake will allow residents and visitors to watch the show. Whether the audience is sitting on the decks of private lake houses or country clubs, hanging out at restaurants or nightclubs on the lake or riding in boats, it's a sight to behold. The fireworks are also visible from many backyards of many houses that do not sit on the lake's shore. The fireworks display will be preceded by an airshow over the lake called "Thunder on the Lake" that starts at 6 p.m. When it concludes the fireworks show will start after darkness falls. For people who aren't content with watching a fireworks show, Gun Barrel City will be hosting a July Fest concert in the newly expanded City Park off Municipal Drive on July 7. The concert will feature white rapper-turned-rocker Vanilla Ice, Texas singer and songwriter Stoney LaRue, Fort Worth The Ranch Radio DJ Charla Corn and local Gospel singer Chris Weis. There will also be a local talent contest held at the July Fest celebration. The gates open for the concert at 5 p.m. The city will not allow visitors to bring coolers to the concert this year as beer will be sold at a concession stand, but attendees should keep in mind that law enforcement agencies around the lake step up their patrols for drivers operating their vehicles under the influence of alcohol during holiday celebrations.
