Brookshire's to build new, expanded grocery store in Mabank; state-of-art, energy-efficient facility planned

MABANK -- Brookshire's Grocery Co. plans to build a new 37,000-square-foot grocery store in Mabank next to the old store, according to store management. Assistant Store Manager Allan Statham said Brookshire's officials hope to open the new store at the intersection of 3rd and Andrew streets by Labor Day of 2012. The new store will be about one-third larger than the current location, he said. Demolition of the old empty buildings that formerly housed Family Dollar and CVS Pharmacy is scheduled to begin soon after the construction permits are obtained. The old store, which will eventually be demolished to make way for new parking space, will remain open until the new store is opened. The new store will include a pharmacy and an expanded bakery and delicatessen, Statham said. It will be Brookshire's flagship store for the Cedar Creek Lake area, he said. "It will be a state-of-the-art, energy-efficient building," Statham said. Brookshire's operates five stores in the area in Athens, Corsicana, Mabank, Malakoff and Seven Points. Only the Mabank and Malakoff stores currently do not include pharmacies. The construction of the new store is expected to enhance Mabank's appearance because it will replace the deteriorating vacant buildings. Mabank officials could not be reached for comment about the new store's construction. Brookshire's corporate offices are Tyler where the first store was built in 1928 by Wood T. Brookshire. It was a 2,500 square-foot-store in downtown Tyler. Initially, Brookshire operated in partnership with five brothers under the "Brookshire Brothers" name. The partnership was dissolved in 1939 and Brookshire continued his grocery store career with three stores in Tyler. Brookshire's now employes 13,000 people in 150 stores in Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas under the names of Brookshire's Food Stores, Super 1 Food Stores, Ole' Foods and Fresh by Brookshire's. Brookshire's has three distribution facilities with two in Tyler and one in Monroe, La. Pictured below is the old Brookshire's store and the adjoining vacant structures that will be demolished.

Fishing Report from TPWD (Jun. 11)

GOOD. Water slightly stained; 81 degrees; 0.46 feet above pool. The hybrid striped bass and white bass bite is on fire and with fish on a feeding frenzy! Start looking for these fish on flats throughout the lake and on edges of drop-offs, especially on cloudy and overcast days. Focus on drop-offs and along seawalls early in the mornings in 5-14 feet of water with slabs. Reports of great catches in 17–26 feet of water using silver or white slabs and spinnerbaits off the bottom with a very slow retrieve. The crappie have also migrated back into the main lake. Look for fish under bridge pylons or under docks in 3-10 feet. Guides have been reporting exceptionally nice catches on sunny warmer days. Report by Brent Herbeck, Herbeck’s Lonestar Fishing Guide Service. Numbers of catfish can be caught targeting humps in 10-20 feet of water, but there are a lot of small fish. Bigger fish can be caught drifting cut shad, carp, drum or bream. Report by Jason Barber, Kings Creek Adventures.
