Nestled in Historic Downtown Mabank Shorty's Soda Shop is a replica of the small town drug store many old timers remember from their youth. The furnishings are from the 1950-era and a lot of the menu items are too. There are lots of sandwiches like a BLT, Fried Bologna, Chicken Salad, Grilled Cheese and Corned Beef. You can also add chips to make a Shorty Basket. If you want something a little lighter, try the Stuffed Avocado or Tomato that can be filled with Chicken Salad, Tuna Salad, Shrimp Salad or Pimento Cheese. And of course there are fountain drinks, ice cream dishes, Banana Splits and Old Fashioned Ice Cream Sodas. Shorty's Soda Shop is at 111 E. Market St., Mabank, TX. 903-887-7632.

Cedar Creek Lake

Fishing Report from TPWD (May 7)

EXCELLENT. stained; 73 degrees; 0.38 feet below pool. Hybrid striped bass and white bass have made a full recovery from the spawn and are now back in the main lake in droves and are on a feeding frenzy! Look for bird activity throughout the lake on flats and near the dam on edges of drop-offs especially on cloudy and overcast days. Target drop-offs along seawalls early in the mornings in 5-14 feet with slabs. Reports of great catches using silver or white slabs and spinners and retrieving off the bottom at a very slow retrieve to catch these fish in depths of 17-26 feet of water. The crappie have also migrated back into the main lake. Look for them under bridge pylons or under docks where the depths are between 3-10 feet. Guides have been reporting exceptionally nice catches on sunny warmer days. Report by Brent Herbeck, Herbeck’s Lonestar Fishing Guide Service. Catfish are best early morning along shallow shoreline walls and rocks targeting shad spawn. Later in the day drift various depths from 10-20 feet of water with cut shad and rough fish. Report by Jason Barber, Kings Creek Adventures.
