Mabank City Council recently increased the speed limit on U.S. Hwy 175 from 65 mph to 75 mph to comply with new state guidelines.
The new speed limit will take effect when the Texas Department of Transportation installs new signs.
Portions of Highway 175 already reflect the higher speed limit approved by state officials last year. The council's action brings Mabank into alignment with other communities in Northeast Texas.
The stretch of highway between Eustace and Athens rose last year to 75 mph.
State officials told Mabank City Hall it needed a new ordinance and new signage must be installed if local police planned to allow for the new speed limit.
